LGIU and membership

What is the LGIU?

The LGIU is a non-partisan local government membership organisation and an independent voice for the sector. We have been empowering councils and advocating for the sector for more than 40 years. Find out more about who we are and what we do.

Can I join LGIU?

The LGIU offers corporate membership to councils in the UK and Ireland. We also welcome other organisations into membership who share our mission to strengthen local government, public services and local democracy. We do not offer individual memberships or subscriptions. Find out more about LGIU membership.

How do I know if I am a member?

If you work for, or are a councillor on, a council or organisation that is an LGIU member, then you are a member and so are all your colleagues. LGIU membership is for all staff and councillors at a member organisation. Find out if you are a member here.

If you are a member, then make sure you sign up on the website to access all your member-only resources.

Can I use LGIU written resources in my reports and in other ways?

If you are from an LGIU member council, then all of our member-only resources are freely available to everyone else within your organisation – staff and councillors.

You are free to use LGIU content in any written reports, briefings, newsletters, etc., that are shared internally. We ask that you cite LGIU as an information source where possible. And please encourage your colleagues to register on the website in order to access LGIU resources directly.

Please do not post LGIU member-only content on publicly accessible platforms or share it with organisations that are not LGIU members. If you would like to share a particular resource with an external partner organisation, please contact us for permission first.

Can I stay in touch with LGIU if I’m not a member?

Yes! Register on the website and opt in to our free newsletters. There’s also plenty of open content on the website for you to explore.

I’m locked out of my LGIU website account, what should I do?

If you have tried to reset your password without success, then please email [email protected] for further assistance.

How do I change the updates that I receive from LGIU?

You control which updates we send you. Go to the ‘Notifications‘ area of your website account and choose the newsletters and alerts you want to receive.

What is the best way to find resources on your website?

The best way to find specific information is to use the search function that appears at the top of every web page. A greatly enhanced search capability was designed into the LGIU’s new website (launched in 2026).

Many visitors also find it productive to browse by topic. Simply click on the ‘hamburger menu’ in the top left of your screen to expand the topic menu.

Keep the ‘Topics’ in your website account up to date. This will ensure that when you log in to the website, the resources most relevant to your interests are the first things you see.
