Join our experts from LGIU for an exclusive briefing on the findings of our 2026 State of Local Government Finance in Scotland survey.

Since 2023, LGIU has surveyed council leaders, chief executives and Section 95 officers across Scotland to evidence, in real time, how councils are coping with a severe and fast-moving financial landscape. This year’s survey, our fourth, took place during the most consequential period for Scottish local government since we began this research. It ran in the midst of two conversations that will ultimately determine the future structure of local government and the future of social care.

This year, we asked the sector what these changes could mean financially: for council tax and funding distribution, for assets and liabilities moving into new council areas, for the cost of transition, and for medium-term financial planning.

Join us at this event to discuss:

  • The results of our survey, and what they mean for the sector.
  • The financial implications of local government restructuring and social care reform.
  • The upcoming Scottish budget, and the pressures and risks councils are facing.
  • The future of local government finance in Scotland, and the case for reform.
