Rewiring the State promises one of the biggest shifts in power and resources away from Whitehall. So far, there is considerable focus on defining the emerging playbook for strategic authorities.

But what do we need to do to ensure that local government makes a success of rewiring?

This is the question LGIU put to more than 60 councils, 20 academics, think-tanks and sector bodies across the local government family. To model what rewiring should mean for local government, LGIU has just published a new research paper based on these discussions and our decades of research and work with the sector.

This discussion will explore 'What does local government do in a rewired state?' and 'How do we make that happen?'

LGIU’s rewiring work is putting the essential practitioner perspective at the heart of the national debate. This panel discussion will feature speakers from councils and will include a presentation of the key findings from LGIU’s conversations with councils.

Key discussion points:

  • What role should local government play in a rewired state?
  • How should neighbourhoods, councils, strategic authorities and national government work together?
  • What will residents actually notice when rewiring succeeds?
