Unlocking Small Sites for Housing

To build the houses we need in the future we can not rely exclusively on finding large sites and large volume developers to build on them.

Instead we must look to smaller sites to help provide the scale of development we need, and a range of small and medium size enterprise (SME) builders with the capacity and support to bring these sites forward.

In partnership with the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) we are investigating how local government can help to unlock more small sites for housing development and forge stronger relationships with smaller local builders.

A report, based on research workshops in Leeds and London, as well as a survey of local planning authorities and interviews with officers from across the country, will be launched in Parliament on 13 December.
