There is an increasingly interesting debate around the Living Wage. And, for once, it isn’t entirely party political. Labour has fully endorsed it but Boris Johnson is implementing it in London and Nick Clegg is in favour. Some Conservative MPs have said they support it but there are some who don’t. Some big businesses have put it in place but business clearly isn’t of one mind over it, especially small businesses.
This week we published a briefing on introducing it (in a voluntary capacity) in local government. We thought it would be good to start a debate here about the pros and cons, so we are making the briefing available to all, but also linking to an extract from a Commons debate from 9 January where Michael Fallon, the Minister for Business and Enterprise puts the government’s point of view.
What do you think? What is the position of your local authority?
