Tuesday 15th August is #CityHallSelfie day! ELGL – an American local government association – have been celebrating the public sector in this light-hearted way for a couple of years and this year we thought we would join in the fun. Kirsten Wyatt of ELGL explains how it all came about and how to get involved.

It’s (almost) the most glorious day of the year for local government public servants: #CityHallSelfie day! This year, we’ll celebrate local government on August 15, 2017. Whether you work for a city, county, special district, town, or other form of local government, August 15 is the day to snap a selfie in front of your government building. ELGL will hand out trophies for #CityHallSelfie takers in 21 categories. And, our friends at Bang the Table are upping the ante and also giving selfie sticks to the award winners! This is your chance to show your pride in local government service. Mark your calendars, review the award categories, and get ready to make history on August 15, 2017!

#CityHallSelfie day is coordinated by ELGL, a big tent local government organization that connects, communicates, and educates about local government service. In 2015, passionate ELGL members started snapping photos of themselves in front of city halls and so ELGL coined the hashtag to compile the pictures. In 2016, we dedicated August 15 to the act of taking a #CityHallSelfie and more than 3,000 selfies were submitted. In 2017, we are hopeful we will break the internet with local gov pride pouring in from city halls and government buildings around the world.

Participating in #CityHallSelfie day is easy:

  1. Stand in front of your local government building
  2. Take a self portrait
  3. Post it to your favorite social media channel with the hashtag #CityHallSelfie
