Rate of Academy conversions slowing down

Last week, the DfE published its monthly statistical brief on the number of Academy applications and conversions during the month of October. A DfE News has not been issued.

Following the pace set in September, it looks like the number of applications per month will settle in the 50 to 60 region. This is considerably lower than it was in the late spring and early summer period of this year. See the diagram [below] which shows the number of applications, the number of Academy order is granted, and latterly the number of academies open on the first day of each month since the Academy conversion programme began.

At the present rate of progress, it will take around 30 years for all schools to in England to convert to Academy status. The chart also shows that it takes around six months to convert following an application, considerably in excess of the DfE stated minimum period of 3 to 4 months.

The Children’s Services Network expects to publish a detailed statistical brief on Academy, versions shortly which will look at the distribution by local authority and phase.
