LGiU Statement ahead of Local Elections

Jonathan Carr-West, Chief Executive, LGiU said:

“There’s always a temptation to view local elections as a glorified opinion poll but we shouldn’t forget that there are real issues at stake tomorrow.

Councils up and down the country are currently facing a higher demand for social care and children’s services with less money to pay for them and no clear direction from Government as to how they will be funded beyond 2020. Just this week, we’ve seen another care home go into administration and a new report that highlights the £3.1bn minimum funding gap in children’s services.

Every day that the Government ignores these problems they become more urgent and harder to solve. And, it is local government that continues to step in and pick up the pieces.

It is tomorrow’s elections that will decide who will make the instrumental decisions about how and if these vital local services progress. And, while national politics certainly casts a very heavy shadow over this set of locals, Brexit or no Brexit, local government will continue to rise to the challenge.

So, whether you vote on national or local issues, the most important thing is that you vote tomorrow.”
