On the day of LGIU’s AGM, Chief Executive Jonathan Carr-West and the whole LGIU team say a fond farewell to our outgoing Chair, Cllr Michael Payne MP.

Today is an important day for the LGIU as our members come together at the Members’ Assembly AGM to appoint a new Executive Board and a new Chair.

But it also marks the moment when we officially say goodbye to our current long-standing Chair, Cllr Michael Payne MP. Michael has been Chair of the LGIU for 10 years and I want to take this opportunity to express our deep gratitude to him for all that he has done for the organisation over that period.

The LGIU is owned and run by our members. The breadth of experience and local government expertise that the Chair, Executive Board and Members’ Assembly representatives bring to the table ensures that the work of the LGIU always reflects and advances the priorities of our membership and the wider sector.

Michael has been Chair of the LGIU at what has been an increasingly challenging time for local government. I am very grateful that he has been willing to share his expertise and sector knowledge with us over the past decade. His tenure as Chair has seen the LGIU go from strength to strength as we have expanded our member services, increased our membership both in the UK and further afield so that we now also support councils in Ireland and Australia, and launched the widely respected Local Democracy Research Centre.

The whole LGIU team has appreciated Michael’s support for our day-to-day operations and the challenge he has provided when necessary to ensure that we remain a forward-looking organisation always focused on the future of local government.

So, thank you, Michael. We know that as their MP you will serve the people of Gedling with the same dedication and good humour that you have brought to the LGIU.

But we also know that this is not goodbye – as Deputy Leader of Gedling Borough Council and a Nottinghamshire County Councillor, Michael remains a steadfast supporter of local government.
