And Finally... 16 Dec. 22 |
Our weekly round-up of shareable resources! |
The LGIU (Local Government Information Unit) is a not-for-profit, non-partisan membership organisation. Our purpose is to keep local government informed, engaged and connected and this newsletter is for sharing. Please do pass it on to colleagues in local government, wherever they might be. |
It's our last weekly round up of 2022, thank you for your support this year and we'll see you in 2023! |
There are still a few more briefings, a Christmas lights edition of Global Local and Daily News for LGIU members like you will continue through the holiday period. |
We hope you have a peaceful and happy end of year break. |
Welcome back to our fourth week of reflecting on our top briefings of 2022! Today, we’re showcasing some of our favourite picks from Quarter Four: October, November and December. |
Quarter Four theme is self-care and balance
|
Even though the hustle, bustle, passion and drive of local government doesn’t stop over the holidays, we’re here to insist that you must. It’s important to strike a balance between work and personal life, and remember to reset and refresh. |
We want you to come back sharper than ever and ready to tackle a new year of local governance – with LGIU right by your side! Our Q4 briefings are a reminder of the value each of you brings to local government and why you must take care of yourself to take care of local democracy. |

Northern Ireland (NI) has its long list of issues. Enduring division, high levels of socio-economic deprivation and political instability would not make NI the obvious choice for the UK’s “happiest” region. But it is. Thomas Lynch takes a look at why. |
|
Ahead of the new year, LGIU’s Chief Executive, Jonathan Carr-West, reflects on the last twelve months and the growth that has happened across the local government sector and across LGIU. |

How can local governments ensure our streetscapes remain a welcoming lived environment during construction and re-developments? This blog takes a look at how the City of Sydney’s creative hoardings program offers an attractive answer to a challenge facing local governments across the world. |

2022 marks the first full year of Global Local, and across 49 editions we have highlighted how local governments across the world have stepped up to meet these challenges. Over the year, we've focused on sharing local best practice, innovative policies, and responses to major and overlooked issues, while encouraging greater connection between councils across the globe. |
This is the first of two editions rounding up what we've covered in 2022, with a focus on the social challenges faced by local government. In January, we'll take a look at topics more connected to planning, including housing, infrastructure, climate change, infrastructure and transport. |

Where in the world are Jack and Hannah? |
Hint: it's a surprisingly grand and traditional town hall in the Northern Hemisphere and the subject of a song in a famous musical. |
Our annual LGIU holiday lunch usually features a quiz. We ran a contest in 2019 with our Have a Mayor-y Little Christmas picture round (and the accompanying science quiz still gets a lot of web traffic, but it was so hard Ingrid hasn't been allowed to run an LGIU quiz since). |
This year we'd like to invite you to another quiz contest Hit the road Jack and Hannah, it's time for the Town-Halliday quiz. We've been enjoying being back out and about with our members in 2022 and Jack and Hannah have been snapping those muncipelfies. See if you can figure out some of the places they've been in 2022. |
Complete the quiz by 5 January 2023 and you could win a coveted LGIU mug that will be the envy of all the office. |
Want to potentially feature in next year's round of snaps? Get in touch with our Membership Co-ordinator Jack Lister jack.lister@lgiu.org |

Victoria’s public transport to be free on Christmas Day and NYE Travel on Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve will be free across Victoria’s public transport network, and additional services will be provided after the CBD fireworks displays when half a million people are expected to crowd Melbourne.
