For the Future of Local Government

LGIU@40: For the Future of Local Government is a manifesto for change. It came about through extensive consultation with LGIU’s membership and the wider local government sector. Identifying three core themes – finance, participation and trust – we developed a set of new ideas for how local government could work better in the future.

This manifesto speaks to challenges that communities everywhere have to contend with. From populism and climate change to economic crisis and rapidly evolving technology, we firmly believe that solutions and opportunities will be created locally. We urgently need the reforms presented in LGIU@40: For the Future of Local Government to ensure that we have a thriving local democracy and a sustainable local government sector to meet the future head-on.

LGIU@40: For the Future of Local Government

An extensive programme of work in 2023 – LGIU’s 40th anniversary – engaging our members and the wider sector, led to the development of a set of solutions-focused ideas for how local government could work better. The recommendations are built around the three core themes that were identified during the work – finance, trust and participation. Read the full manifesto.

LGIU@40: background

LGIU@40 is driven by our core belief in the vital role that local democratic institutions have in creating opportunities and better places for everyone. The final ideas were developed through sector-wide consultation, and Jonathan Carr-West outlined our aims at the start of the engagement process in this white paper.
