The benefits of social pedagogy and its practice in Scotland


‘The benefits of social pedagogy and its practice in Scotland’ is being hosted by a consortium consisting of Camphill Scotland, Children in Scotland and Kibble Education and Care Centre, and the Social Pedagogy Professional Association (SPPA).

This event has been sponsored by Kezia Dugdale MSP, convener of the Cross-Party Group for Children and Young People. It will be an opportunity to learn more about the benefits of social pedagogy, and to hear about the close resonance between social pedagogy and public policy provision in Scotland.

Social pedagogy is a relationship-based and educative approach to working with people and is applicable across a range of human services professions. With its developmental orientation to realising potential it is sometimes referred to as ‘education in the broadest sense’. Social pedagogy is a rights-based ethos that fosters equality and respect and values relationships, dialogue, joint activity and team work. The kind of rights-based approach, and the values important in social pedagogy are apparent in the Kilbrandon Report and the children’s hearings system in Scotland. Social pedagogy supports individual human development and promotes social justice, and has a deep concern for those individuals or social groups that are materially, culturally or socially disadvantaged and marginalised.

This event will be an opportunity to hear directly from practitioners and service-users from organisations that engage with social pedagogy across Scotland.
