National and global events have the potential to drive short term increases in hate crime incidents and police forces across the UK have reported worrying spikes in instances of hate crime of all kinds over the course of the last year, both in terms of verbal and physical abuse and tragically, some high profile terrorist attacks. But how can councils fulfil their duties to prevent these events and respond to them quickly when they occur?
In this lunchtime discussion, Declan will explain the legal responsibilities of council employees and elected members and the practical application of these duties, leading into a group discussion. We will consider some of the following questions:
- What does the public sector equality duty mean for a local authority’s work on tackling hate crime?
- How can councils work most effectively with the Prevent programme? Is it working and how can it work better?
- What is the role of the local authority as an employer?
This event is an opportunity to discuss your authority’s approach to hate crime with other councils and with a leading legal expert on these issues. Declan O’Dempsey is on the “A Panel” of EHRC counsel & does sensitive and difficult employment, discrimination, human rights, public and regulatory law.
