Germany and the EU27: Where Next?

Doors open at 5pm
Event begins at 5.30pm

BACKGROUND

While the European Union has rarely been short of challenges, recent times have seen it confronted with a multitude of complex issues. Contrary to the debate in the UK, however, Brexit is not a priority agenda item in the EU27, including Germany. Following September’s German federal election, talks are still ongoing to form a coalition government to be led by Angela Merkel. All the while, debate continues internally and externally on Germany’s evolving leadership role in Europe and beyond, and how it should exercise that role. The EU27 must also decide in what form they will confront the major concerns of the day, updating the architecture of the Union to address changing preferences and objectives. With this backdrop, join us for a discussion featuring senior German figures on the path ahead for Germany and the EU.

Speakers:
Elmar Brok MEP European People’s Party Brexit Coordinator · European Parliament Stefanie Bolzen London Correspondent · Die Welt Dr Philipp Murmann Federal Treasurer and Board Member · CDU Quentin Peel Associate Fellow, Europe Programme · Chatham House Dr Kirsty Hughes | Chair Director · Scottish Centre on European Relations
