Ready for Ageing?: The Government’s Response to the House of Lords Select Committee on Public Service and Demographic Change

Bookmark

Summary

In March 2013 the House of Lords Select Committee on Public Service and Demographic Change published its report of the 2012-13 session. The report raised concerns that public services are seriously underprepared for the dramatic shift towards an older population. The Government’s response outlines specific actions it is taking to address some of those concerns. These include:

Asking the government’s chief scientist to lead an investigation into the challenges of an ageing population

A consultation on proposed changes to pension schemes

Changes to the care system, such as a cap on costs for social care.

Pooling health and social care budgets with an additional £2 billion.

Supporting independence through housing, transport, volunteering, and outreach services
