Public health – outcomes framework and funding

Bookmark

Summary

This briefing summarises Improving outcomes and supporting transparency – a public health outcomes framework for England 2013-2016 and the Health Secretary’s announcement about public health funding. The total budget for 2013-14 will be around £5.2 billion, with around £2.2billion allocated to local authorities. Shadow budgets will be allocated for 2012-13.

The outcomes framework (described below) was consulted on extensively last year, and overall its approach – putting emphasis on the wider determinants of health – is very positive. Local authorities, public health teams and health and wellbeing boards will welcome the fact that this vital element of local strategic planning and performance management has finally appeared, and can be incorporated into joint health and wellbeing strategies.
