DfE – Statutory Guidance for Schools and Local Authorities on Careers Guidance and consultation on extending the age range

Summary

• The Department for Education has published statutory guidance on the provision of careers guidance for pupils in school years 9 to 11.

• The guidance follows closely the tenant of the new duty which comes into force in September 2012 for schools in England to secure independent and impartial careers advice for their pupils. The guidance also advises on the relationship between schools and local authorities in relation to their respective statutory duties.

• This briefing will be of interest to executive members/Cabinet portfolio holders and senior officers with responsibilities for children and young people and for local economic development.
