Council tax debt collection – harm to children – Children’s Society

Bookmark

Summary

Councils will wish to pursue families who default on the Council Tax payments. However, a Children’s Society survey in 2014 found that of four in 10 families who got into debt found that their Council was ‘not helpful’ or ‘extremely unhelpful’ to deal with, a figure higher than other creditors such as payday lenders and energy companies. Given that large numbers of these families had children at home, the Children’s Society has investigated further and produced recommendations to lessen the reported impact of stress, depression and anxiety of the lives of the children of these families.
