An alliance of more than 40 charities, healthcare organisations and private operators published a joint letter in the Guardian last week, calling on the Government to ‘end the crisis’ in the social care system.
The organisations called on health secretary Andrew Lansley to build on recommendations set out in the Dilnot Report to create a ‘sustainable and clear social care system’.
At LGiU we are very aware of this and will be providing the Secretariat to an All Party Parliamentary Local Government Group, to look at the long term future of care and support for the elderly, and contribute to the government’s social care funding White Paper.
Speaking in the Commons last week during a debate on adult social care, Heather Wheeler MP, said:
I am [the] chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group on local government. We will be conducting a new inquiry into social care, which will dovetail with the findings of the Dilnot report. We hope that, as an all-party group, we will be able to examine the issue a bit more widely and think outside the box, in order to be helpful to Ministers and give them as many ideas as possible. I know that a number of Members who are in the Chamber today will be sitting on that inquiry with me, and I am grateful for the all-party support.
