Frequently asked questions

Am I a member of LGIU?

We offer corporate membership to local authorities and other organisations across the UK, Ireland and Australia. If you are a councillor or work for one of our member organisations then you too are a member and can access all LGIU member resources.

What do LGIU members get?

LGIU members have access to a wealth of valuable local government specific resources. These include:

  • a daily news service every morning rounding up the top local government press stories of the day
  • briefings on all the topics that local government covers – we have in depth analysis, essential background information, roundups of key developments and research, practical guides
  • a growing bank of case studies
  • inspiration and best practice from around the world – you can access original content for any of our core countries (England & Wales, Scotland, Ireland and Australia) plus find curated international stories and case studies
  • a 25% discount on all training,

How can I access my council/organisation’s LGIU membership resources?

That’s easy! Just sign up on our website using your council/organisation email address and you will immediately be able to read any and all member-only content on the website.

When you sign up make sure you opt to receive the ‘essential resources’ updates – this is a key part of your membership. It’s your Daily News service and your link to any newly published LGIU material.

If you want to get more involved with our original research then get in touch with andrew.walker@lgiu.org over at our Local Democracy Research Centre.

How can I book on a training session?

You can find all our training courses listed in our training and events area. Once you have found the session you want click Book now and follow the instructions. You will need a credit card to book online.

We also provide inhouse training that can be tailored to your council’s specific needs. Find out more about this here or contact barry.obrien@lgiu.org.

Anyone can book LGIU training but members receive a 25% discount on all bookings.

Can I be invoiced when booking training online, rather than use a credit card?

Generally no, we usually require a credit card for training that is booked online. However if you are booking multiple places on one course, which come to a value of £600 or more then we are able to send you an invoice.

I am not an LGIU member - is there anything for me?

Never fear, we have interesting stuff for everyone. Browse our website and you will find a lot of articles that are available to read immediately. Sign up on the website and create a free account; you will be able to unlock some extra free content and we will send you a weekly email packed full of local government news and good reads.

But you won’t be able to read any member-only content, so none of the in-depth legislation analysis or essential backgrounders or monthly roundups of key developments and no daily news service or invitations to exclusive panel discussions, workshops or other events.
